Musty or Earthy Odor
What it means
That damp, earthy smell comes from compounds given off by active mold and wet organic material under the house. The "stack effect" - warm air rising through the house - pulls crawlspace air up through floor vents, baseboards, and stairwells, so the smell travels upstairs even though the source is below. It's typically strongest during the wet season and right after the furnace runs. Air fresheners only mask it; the smell won't clear until the moisture source is fixed.
The fix
